I remember growing in the 80’s in Brooklyn, there were days when I was hungry. I didn’t have all these name brand clothes, I never got the latest toys yet I have some amazing memories. Not all were great memories but they were valued memories.
I remember staying out till 11p.m. playing hide and seek, hot peas and butter, kick the can.. I remember days in the handball courts, or just days watching the boys play football.
Summer nights we would listen to freestyle music or music about love. We would go upstairs eat and be dying to go right back outside.
Family days to the beach, camping out till the next day in Brighton Beach.. I remember sitting and just watching the cars from the highway drive by, and just wondering where everyone was going. I would sit for hours and wonder how life would be when I got older. I was like wow I would be 26 years old for the year 2000. Today children do not play outside, they do not have imaginations, they are stuck on these electronic babysitters. Parents today need to make efforts for play dates and family days… Play music in the home that children can sing and dance to. Teach the children what life is really about…
1980~ I was a 6 year old little girl with a Spider-man big wheel and a tough pair of skates. Disco would play loud out the windows of the apartments on one side, and Salsa out of the others. The streets would be filled with water from the fire hydrants and we would get wet in that freezing water till all hours of the night. In the 80’s you could be 6 years old and play outside and just check in every once in a while. These days people will not let their 6 year old play on the front lawn, or get in a pool if its 80 degrees out side because its too cold. When did life become “so perfect”
